Modernist Poems : Activity - Identify modernist metaphors in these short poems

Hello, readers here my blog part of activity. This blog sumitted to Department of  English Maharaja KrushnKumarsinhji Bhavnagar University.

Meaning of 'modernism':-

Collins in definition of 'modernism'

Modernism:- was a movement in the arts in the first half of the twentieth century that rejected traditional values and techniques, and emphasized the importance of individual experience.

Modernism is both a philosophical movement and an art movement that, along with cultural trends and changes, arose from wise-scale and far-reaching  transformations in western society during late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among the factors that shaped modernism were the development of modern industrial societies and the rapid growth of cities, foll9wed then by reactions of horror to world war 1. Modernism also rejected the certainty of Enlightenment thinking, and many modernists rejected religious beliefbe

Characteristics of Modernism:-

  1. Marked by a strong and intentional break with tradition and it is also related to politics, religion etc... Though modernism becomes prominent after traditionalisnm so knowing the difference between these two ''sm' is important. Traditionalism, which is based on tradition, is a dominant way of life. There are always predetermined rules, explanations for people and their life in traditionalism. Objectivism is another important point in traditionalism. There is one truth for everything in traditionalism. High class people are more important than middle or low class people in traditionalism because it gives importance for elevated style. On the other hand, aa modernism is a break with tradition, so this break includes a strong reaction against established religious, political, and social views. According to modernism, there is no such thing as absolute truth. All things are relative. Another thing, where in traditionalism objectivism is an important point, modernism gives importance to subjectivism.
  2. Realism attempts to portray external objects and events as the common or middle class people see them in every day life. Impressionalism tries to portray the psychological impression that these objects and events make on characters, emphasizing the roke of individual perception and exploring the nature of conscious and subconscious mind.
A brief introduction about modernism's poems:-

T.E.Hulme's:-

T.E.Hylme was an influential poet and thinker in twentieth century.
He revolutionised the way English poetry approached issues of rhyme, metre, and imagery.

1.The Embankment':-

Hulme's masterpiece the poem is ''he Embankment' , written around 1908-9. The Embankment in talk about fallen gentleman. In symbols gold heels and old star-eaten blanket of sky . In talk about London in some people's are homeless and see prostitutes. And  symbol of stars in the night sky. In image of the month - eaten blanket. Another symbol is gutter.

And rhymes are cold,gold,old,fold... Many symbols like ''star-eaten', ''moth- eaten'. Images are 'gold heels' and 'fiddles'. This poem in 7 line so this is very short poem.

2.'Darkness'

'Darkness' poem written by Joseph Campbell .  Joseph Campbell was an Irish poet who wrote in both English and Gaelic. In the poem 'Darkness' in talk about 🌟 star, wind, 🌒 moon , 🌃 night,  etc nature elements . So all are like symbol and also talk about woman's  and child. Moon comparison with hunted thing, dropping into the cloud. This poem in poet feel darkness something bad so poet talk about drakness in poem only 4lines

3.'Image' by Edward Storer'

In this poem in poet use the symbol of white moon as it connects heart of two lovers, while here the poet use it in opposite side that it burns lovers that they cannot chate each other, their loneliness is there though they are together,;this shows the modern aspect that people are alone though that are in crowd.

4.' In a Station Of The Metro '

In The entire poem is basically a single metaphor. If you were ever confused about the difference between a metaphor and simile, and the difference it can make to use one instead of the other, this is a great poem to look at. Pound could have said that the faces"look like " flower petals, which would have produced a simile. By leaving this expression out, the poem reads aa if it were saying that the faces are petals. Textbook metaphor. The two images are fused into one.

The success of the comparison between the hunanhfaces and tgetflower petals depends upon making the second image seem very life like. So pound uses some intense natural imagery to decribedethe "wet, black bough" to which the petals are attached . This image connects to our sense of sight and touch, so the reader feels like he or she could reach like a flower from a tree. He also uses some alliteration with " black" and "bough" , as if the words on the page and the images in our head were fusing together at the same time.

5. The pool by Hilda Doolittle

This poem is about overpowering or colonising  someone. First it was asked that are you alive oe not. Very sarcastically, we can see that no. It is not alive. Because now it is there in the net of somebody. Fish after going in the net, cannot survive for longer.

6. "Insouciance" by Richard Aldington

In this poem the poet presents that how people are living their life insouciance way with carelessness . They try to express their feeling in literature as poet says " I make for myself little poem" the way of living is with no excitement "in and out of the dreary trenches" but though all are walking on their path with such cheer, the reference of "white-winged Doves" is used for modern culture of living life and feeling of isolation is there.

7 morning at the window by T.S.Eliot

In this poem is highly using images to give reference about the main theme and Effect of Industrialization. Which draws away the picture of poverty that how human being are suffering , they didn't even find food to eat. In this poem see the suffering of labour  class after the mechanization of industries.

8 The Red Wheelbarrowthis  by William Carlos Williams

In this poem is divide four stanzas. The poem describes in humongous detail not just a Wheelbarrow but a whole scene, a moment stuck in time. Williams's form in the poem accomplishes this by using the strange break points to emphasize certain words and letting the words and their rhythms work for themselves. In the poem see word 'depends'.

9 "Anecdote of the jar-wallace Stevens

This is a imaginative poem which exaggerate the picture of jar. Poet placed that jar upon hill, jar reminds us the Grecian urn of Keats. Poets sing the glory of the jar and also ask the question that which is superior ' a work of art or nature?'.

10 "I (A - E.E.Cummings

"A leaf falls with loneliness"

In this poem shows itself the state of being alone and sokitudes There is a word "fall"  which represents the state of dullness. It can be a fall of civilization, individual's hope or fall of anything else. If a leaf falls from a tree then the fallen leaf become lonely. In modernist literature we can see fall of spirituality and also fall of hope . Loneliness represents the separation from the entire world.

  • "All my sons" is a creation of a very well known. American play writer and essayist Arthur Miller. It was based upon true story. Which was published in a newspaper. There was a story about same exidents during war and that inspiers him lot. It was about how some defective aircraft engines done damage during war in Ohio. And that real story creates a plot for play in our author's mind.

  • That real plot and story was transformed into a very well known and most famous play during that time and it was named as "All my sons".

  • This play is a reason why Arthur Miller was knows as an American Activist during the 1950s. This play is written in three acts. Joe Keller is the protagonist of this play. This play takes place in the Backyard of Joe Keller's home.

  • Joe and Kate Keller are main characters. Who are in centre of the whole play. They have two son. Chris and Lary Keller.It is a quite happy family and they live happy life but one incident brings disastrous in their life. For once there was a case on Joe's factory for production on defective cylinder heads. Joe and his partner Steave Server were guilty for it as per court's order. But the real scene was total different when defective pieces were produced and so Steave called him but;

  • Suddenly Joe gets pneumonia and he cannot go to factory and so he said Steave that, he will take the reaponsrespons for it but cover all defects in cylinder heads and sheeped them out.

  • So, Steave trust his friend and do what Joe said. But Joe is the real practical men and father and so he deny for that thing and so he gets Steave was send to prison and that thing destroy his family the Deever family.

  • They shifted to New York and they cannot engaged with larry. Stays alone because Larry was fighter plan pilot and he cannot bear that incident and so he wrote a letter to Ann.

He wrote:-

"I cannot bear to live anymore . I can't tell you how I feel ..  I can't face anybody. .
I want you to know that you mustn't wait for me."

  • We can easily judge cause of this dialogue that Larry is the real soldier and he can't face that his father becomes a reason for Twenty one soldiers death. So, he committed suicide and he was reported missing by Army as per his plan.

  • Ann and her brother George Deever use to think that their father is gailty as per Joe's stutement in court and so they leave them on their own and single letter or even chrismas card to their father.

  • When Joe comes to know about it this thing makes him gait, because he is a person with pure heart and soul and he can understand that, that thing was done cause of him only and that can be done with him too.

  • So he tried that to convince them that that time was crucial and what was done is just because of war situation and  those days ware such days so that type of mistake were done and it was not Steave's mistake.

  • George also realizes something and so he went to meet his father in jail. He is now lawyer and so he understood what his father said and came to Joe Keller to home.

  • When play is performed . Ann is at joesJohome because she loves Chris and she wants to get merried with him and so she is their . But George come to konw about truth and so George said to Ann.

"You are not going to marry him and you are coming with me".

  • But Ann refuses it and decided to stay at Joe's home with Chris. But till it Chris never beloved that his father is guilty and he use to trust his father only.

  • But at the end of Act-2 he comes to konw that his father done that mistake and his father's mistake destroy one family who are neighbour and friends and other Twenty one families who lost their son during plan crash because of cracked cylinder heads.

  • This incident shaken Chris and he decided to leave home and his father Joe and his money , too. He thinks that that money is colcures use that money and so he decided to leave.

  • But Joe cannot accept that thing because he never thinks that he done any wrong thing . He use to think that he is enough mature and practice. Person of the society and so he has to done it far his sons because he has to leaves something's and so he done that Joe said:

"Who worked for nothings in that war? Did they ship gun or truck .... Without price? Is that clean?
Why am I bas?"

  • He never realizes his mistake and when that stuff came out he tries to prove that he is right.

  • Mother Kate also knows that and so she also tries to caver that point but one more reason was thers. When their younger son Larry was reported missing on 25th November.

  • There was a hidden fear in Kate's mind that if Larry is dead then he was surely killed by that defected cylinder heads and it was just because of his own father. But her mind is not ready to accept that,

  • A son can killed by his own father so she never believes that Larry is dead. So, because of it Kate family believes that.

Ann is Larry's girl and Chris should not Marry Larry's girl.

  • When Kate is not ready to accept that Larry is dead then at the end Ann reveals that Larry wrote a last letter to her and told her to never wait for him any more. When Joe Kate and Chris knew about that letter and that reality they realizes that Joe done terrible mistake and finally Joe accept that he done wrong thing.

  • We cannot bleam Ann for it because she done it for to get married and get love. But then it makes Joe realizes that he done wrong and he said to Chris:

"I can't steep here . I'll feel better if I go."

  • He was ready to surrounder but then. Something happens and a sound of shot From the home and we can come to know that Joe himself committed suicide cause of realization of his own mistake . Chris also feels sorry and Kate consouls him that he never feels sorry about him.

Conclusion:-

  • 'All My Sons' is a tragic play written by wellkown writer Arthur Miller. At the end of the play our protogonist , Joe Keller . Committed suicide and regreat for his own mistake. His son Chris said:

"I didn't mean to-"

  • But his mother told him to not feel guilt about it and she also accept that her husband done some wrong thing and he got result for it. Arthur Miller created a fruitful and mature literary work which is ful of reality. Emotions and struggle.
