Meaning of 'modernism':-
Collins in definition of 'modernism'
Modernism:- was a movement in the arts in the first half of the twentieth century that rejected traditional values and techniques, and emphasized the importance of individual experience.
Modernism is both a philosophical movement and an art movement that, along with cultural trends and changes, arose from wise-scale and far-reaching transformations in western society during late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among the factors that shaped modernism were the development of modern industrial societies and the rapid growth of cities, foll9wed then by reactions of horror to world war 1. Modernism also rejected the certainty of Enlightenment thinking, and many modernists rejected religious beliefbe
Characteristics of Modernism:-
- Marked by a strong and intentional break with tradition and it is also related to politics, religion etc... Though modernism becomes prominent after traditionalisnm so knowing the difference between these two ''sm' is important. Traditionalism, which is based on tradition, is a dominant way of life. There are always predetermined rules, explanations for people and their life in traditionalism. Objectivism is another important point in traditionalism. There is one truth for everything in traditionalism. High class people are more important than middle or low class people in traditionalism because it gives importance for elevated style. On the other hand, aa modernism is a break with tradition, so this break includes a strong reaction against established religious, political, and social views. According to modernism, there is no such thing as absolute truth. All things are relative. Another thing, where in traditionalism objectivism is an important point, modernism gives importance to subjectivism.
- Realism attempts to portray external objects and events as the common or middle class people see them in every day life. Impressionalism tries to portray the psychological impression that these objects and events make on characters, emphasizing the roke of individual perception and exploring the nature of conscious and subconscious mind.
A brief introduction about modernism's poems:-
T.E.Hulme's:-
T.E.Hylme was an influential poet and thinker in twentieth century.
He revolutionised the way English poetry approached issues of rhyme, metre, and imagery.
1.The Embankment':-
Hulme's masterpiece the poem is ''he Embankment' , written around 1908-9. The Embankment in talk about fallen gentleman. In symbols gold heels and old star-eaten blanket of sky . In talk about London in some people's are homeless and see prostitutes. And symbol of stars in the night sky. In image of the month - eaten blanket. Another symbol is gutter.
And rhymes are cold,gold,old,fold... Many symbols like ''star-eaten', ''moth- eaten'. Images are 'gold heels' and 'fiddles'. This poem in 7 line so this is very short poem.

Moon comparison with hunted thing, dropping into the cloud. This poem in poet feel darkness something bad so poet talk about drakness in poem only 4lines
3.'Image' by Edward Storer'
In this poem in poet use the symbol of white moon as it connects heart of two lovers, while here the poet use it in opposite side that it burns lovers that they cannot chate each other, their loneliness is there though they are together,;this shows the modern aspect that people are alone though that are in crowd.
4.' In a Station Of The Metro '
In The entire poem is basically a single metaphor. If you were ever confused about the difference between a metaphor and simile, and the difference it can make to use one instead of the other, this is a great poem to look at. Pound could have said that the faces"look like " flower petals, which would have produced a simile. By leaving this expression out, the poem reads aa if it were saying that the faces are petals. Textbook metaphor. The two images are fused into one.
The success of the comparison between the hunanhfaces and tgetflower petals depends upon making the second image seem very life like. So pound uses some intense natural imagery to decribedethe "wet, black bough" to which the petals are attached . This image connects to our sense of sight and touch, so the reader feels like he or she could reach like a flower from a tree. He also uses some alliteration with " black" and "bough" , as if the words on the page and the images in our head were fusing together at the same time.
