Matthew Arnold born 24 December 1822 and  death 15 April 1888 was as English poet and cultural critic who worked as an inspector of schools. He was The son of Thomas Arnold The famed headmaster of rugby school, and William Delafield Arnold, novelist and colonial administrator. Matthew Arnold has been characterized as a sage writer, a type of writer who chastises and instructs the reader on contemporary social issues. Matthew Arnold the Victorian poet and critic. He was first modern critic who gave his  contribution in new criticism. He was not only great poet but also literary critic. His most famous essay is "The study poetry", it has published in 1880.

Matthew Arnold was a famous  views about good poetry. The first essay in the 1888 volume was originally published as the general introduction to T.H.Ward's anthology, The English poets. He don't like the spasmodic expression of Romanticism. He was believed that when we wrote poetry at that time discipline in writing and recommend the classical writers.

Matthew Arnold talk about good poetry in his essay. Idea of Matthew Arnold which I found interesting that, he says "poetry is cruticicr of life". It is true that poetry is criticism of life and this definition is a very relevant in our time.so, according to me that is interesting idea of Matthew Arnold.Arnold has given good point of poetry. Mostly poet writes his experience & established currently ideas in poetry. "Criticism of life " means that profound application of ideas to life and poetry represented social, political & religion life. We can find in at present poetry that generally poet used some natural imagination and also they connected with truthfulness & some related with beauty also.

Another things are that philosophy & science always presented logical ideas with proofs. But poetry presented reality of human with laws of poetic truth. When poet feels some emotion of his life then he writes with good arrangement and creative words. Arnold manner & matter of poetry occupy equal important place. He considers poetry as a 'criticism of life ' which constitutes both " poetic truth " (reason) as well as "poetic beauty" (emotion). Though modern literary criticism wouldn't agree completely with Arnold's views, his contribution remains notable.

According to Arnold, in Touchstone Method there is scientific objectivity to critical evaluation by providing comparison & analysis as two primary tools for judging individual poet. Here, judging individual genius is not appropriate in present time because when you judge something you have to know about or think about certain basic idea or think. We can not judge by only one fragment of any work. To Jung something you have to know about others work or we can not judge new poet's work to the ancient work because as we know that everyone has their own idea, own genius. According to Arnold in this method he says that take best two poem & compare both, compare the lines of both the poem. So may be this method is problematic. He was the founder of criticism & through.

Matthew Arnold's Touchstone method is out of date & irrelevant in our present time. Because touchstone method is comparative method of study. This method is comparison and analysis as two primary tools for judging individual poet.... It means we can not give our interpretation & judgement to other works, because we can not compare their work with other work for example if we compare two things. Many other things. We can not judge both mobile with Touchstone method, because every one have a specialty as well as literature we can not give our interpretation & judgement to compare with other work, because we can not compare every one have their own interpretation & views towards their work. So the idea of Touchstone method is irrelevant in our time.
