'Birthday party'

Hello, readers here my blog part of activity. This blog sumitted to Department of  English Maharaja KruashnKumarsinhji Bhavnagar University.

Harold Pinter:-

  • Harold Pinter CH CBE was a British playwright, screenwriter, director and actor. A Novel Prize winner, Pinter was one of the most influential modern British dramatists with a writing career that spanned more than 50 years. His best known plays include 'The Birthday Party.
'The Birthday party:-

  • The Birthday Party is the second full length play by Harold Pinter, first published in London by Encore Publishing in 1959. It is one of his best known and most frequently performed plays. In the setting of a rundown seaside boarding house,a little birthday party is turned into a nightmare when two Sinister strangers arrive unexpectedly. The play has been classified as a comedy of menace.

1. Why are two scenes of Lulu omitted from the movie?

  • Lulu's two scenes can't omitted from the movie may be Director shown only good thing, and in the movie Lulu's character portrait as differ from novel, And may be he didn't want to focus on female characters in the movie otherwise he was less focus on female characters justification like Meg and Lulu because this character show only few minutes and Meg and Lulu haven't individuals Identity. In the film we can see Meg most of in the kitchen and Lulu show ready for sexual relationship.

2. Is movie successful in giving us the effect of menace? Where you able to feel it while reading the text?

  • Yes, while watching movie we do feel the effect of menace. The pause between dialogues we can feel whilewatching, but while reading we don't take pause and we cannot feel also. The effect of menace come when we watch the expression of actors and by that we also can feel.
  • The pause and silence of Pinter is hard to understand while reading. When we have audio visual effect the menacing effect becomes stronger. But while reading some time it happens that we do not understand effect and so we can not feel it.

3. Do you feel the effect of lurking danger while viewing the movie? Where you able to feel the same whie reading the text?

  • Watching movie at that time knocking on the door with fearful sound and moreover when they played game of blind man's buff with light off and scene of verbal violence by Goldberg & McCann at that time I feel more lurking.

4. What do you in 'Newspaper' in the movie? Petey is reading Newspaper to Meg, it torn into pieces by McCain, pieces are hidden by Petey in last scene.

  • "Newspaper" is used as very significant symobol in the play and in the movie as well. After the opening scene we can see that, Petey is reading a newspaper and Meg is asking about the news to him. It can be interpreted as being a male figure petey is using his power over his wife Meg. Meg and pity both have their indifferent world this is the reason why pity replied in a serious tone When Meg is asking about good news from newspaper.

  • In such way it also becomes a tool for Meg to taunt her husband who is not able to give her a child. In between newspaper is also used as a tool for hiding a face. There is a scene in which MacCann keeps on shredding a newspaper for long time. Through this act may be he bursting out his furiousness of frustration. The sound of tearing out Newspaper creates an uneasy effect on the mind of audience.

  • By this act he may also tries to destroy the reality of his life as well. This sheltered pieces are hidden by Pity in the last scene, through this act we can say that pity don't want that his weakness may come out in front of others or rather he wants to keep him in happy world of illusion.

5. Camera is positioned over the head of MaCain when he is playing Blind Man's Buff and is positioned at the top with a view of room like a cage(trap) when Stanley is playing it. What interpretations can you give to these positioning of camera?

  • The technique of camera is very significant throughout the film. It is more material centric than Humans. While playing the game of Blind Man's Buff it shows its main function. The camera first moves in same direction when MacCain was playing the game. It moves over the head of him and wherever it goes it shows other things.

  • But when Stanley was playing Blind Man's Buff then it positioned at the top with a view of room like cage,as it signifies the centrality of the main character. How Stanley looks at the situation. He feels the room as just like a cage from which he won't be able to run out. He has to caught at least one in this game. He is helpless.

6. "Pinter restored theatre to its basic elements: an enclosed space and unpredictable dialogue, where people are at the mercy of one another and pretense Crumbles." (Pinter, Art, Truth& Politics: Excerpts from the 2005 Nobel Lecture). Does this happen in the movie?

  • Yes, this do happen in movie. Most of the scenes are in drawing room the space is so narrow and the dialogues are also unpredictable. We can not imagine what is going on in the mind of characters. Every character is on the mercy of each other, Weather it is Stanley, or Petey, Meg, Goldberg, MacCann, or Lulu, Every character is living on other. At some point of time every one's false faces falls down. They became what they really are. So this lines do happen in movie.

7. How does viewing movie helps in better understanding of the play 'The Birthday Party'  with its typical characteristics (like Painteresque, pause, lurking danger, silence, menace)?

  • Really Movie help for better understanding of the play 'The Birthday party'. In the Movie I can well understand tone like silence, pause, menace. But in the movie I can't seen Painteresque characteristics while reading a play at that time I was seeing Painteresque characteristics.

8. With which of the following observations you agree.

  • I want to agree with the second observation because first of I can't think about make movie upon this type of play because It's difficult task to make this type of movie and here Pinter empathetic way used all movie making technique and powerful script. This film also used many things symbolic way.

9. Or 10. If you were director or screenplay writer, what sort of difference would you make in the making of movie?

  • This film is great in it self, I don't feel anything to change, but may be I will add the scene of Lulu because I don't think Pinter has written it purpiselessly. Other than that I don't think movie needs any further change.

  • I would be choice this actor to play the role of characters.

  1. Stanley : Ranveer
  2. Goldberg:- Ronit Roy
  3. McCain:-Anupam Kher
  4. Lulu:- vidhya Balan
  5. Meg:- Jaya Bachchan
  6. Petey:-Rishi Kapoor

11. Do you seen any similarities among Kafka's Joseph K (in 'The Triak'), Orwell's Winston Smith( in 'Nineteen Eighty-Four') and Pinter's Victor (in 'One for the Road')?

  • Kafka's Joseph K, Orwell's Winston Smith and Pinter's Victor these all have one thing in common which is about their suffering. All of them are suffering from a crime or guilt Which they might not been committed also. They all suffer in common from dominance of society. Because of this social hegemonic culture, they trapped into it and was living a life as they were in the cage.

"The Great Dictator" movie review..:-

Charlie Chaplin:-

Hello, readers here my blog part of activity. This blog sumitted to Department of  English Maharaja KruashnKumarsinhji Bhavnagar University.

Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin KBE was an English comic actor, filmmaker, and composer who rose tobfame in the Era of silent film. He became a worldwide icon through his screen persona, "The Tram", and is considered one of the most important figures in the history of the film industry. His career spanned more than 75years, from childhood in the Victorian Era until a year before his death in 1977, and encompassed both adulation and controversy.

'The Great Dictator'

He became increasingly political, and his next film The Great Dictator satirized Adolf Hitler. The Great Dictator is a 1940 American political Satire comedy drama film written, directed, produced, scored by, and starring British comedian Charlie Chaplin, following the tradition of many of his other films.

Chaplin's film advanced a stirring condemnation of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, fascism, antisemitism, and the Nazis. Charlie Chaplin And Hitler both are born in same as one country. Only different of two days in the time of birth both are similar in height, tooth brush mustache, both are famous also but different between them was one was laughing of the world and another was crying of the world.

Here Chaplin try to criticize Hitler and his system through comic way. Chaplin try to destroyed history of Europium country. He was great director, writer, producer and actor also. The Great Dictator was Chaplin's first film with dialogue. Chaplin plays both a little Jewish Barber, living in the ghetto, and Hynkel, the dictator ruler of Tomainnia.

In his autobiography Chaplin quotes himself as having said:" 'One doesn't have to be a Jew to be Anti Nazi. All one has to be is a normal decent human being".In the movie Chaplin played double role first Barbara and second as Leader. As Leader his name is Hynkel and played Jewish Barber role.

When Hynkel meets his neighbours leader Napaloni at that time both leader meeting showing as like comedy. Both are fight each other in sepreat room and they called done meeting. Through this scene Chaplin satire on political leaders which kind their behaviour during present of public and opposite behaviour when they are alone.

Chaplin try to interpreted behaviour, styles and habits of political person. Hitler was also loved camera. Whenever he goes in public space always he takes with cameraman. In the movie one scene that he take photo with child. He try to behave that he loved children.

When Napolian's came at that time he demanded cameraman. Same as we can find in present time Many political people don't miss to chance of photography. They arrange every thing before they came. Whenever and wherever they will go with cameraman. Sometime question by people that they launched work and plan for specially photography. Chaplin satire that thus Every political person lived in own personal selfie zone.

In the movie any punishment given by powerful peole. There are not court. During rules of Hitler has not court for justify. If you speak against them tgaen they justify. It is not right way of justification.

In during Hitler time Chaplin try to do movie against Hitler and Satire upon political party so Charlie Chaplin is great person to try against and do against Hitler.

At the end of the movie great speech given by Charlies Chaplin. Each and every words used with significantly and today also use of people in the same speech.

"Midnight's Children" movie review

"Midnight's children":-

Hello, readers here my blog part of activity. This blog sumitted to Department of  English Maharaja KruashnKumarsinhji Bhavnagar University.

Midnight's children is a 2012 Canadian British film adaptation of Salman Rushdie's 1981 novel with the same name. Directed by Oscar nominated director Deepa Mehta and based on Booker prize winning novel by Salman Rushdie, the film has an extraordinary as well as interesteing. Frames and features.

Post colonial as the word itself shows refers to person after colonialism. Colonialism is refferd to subjugation of weak countries and nations by the strong ones. When subjugation of colonizer by the colonised come to its end.

And the colonizer physically leaves, it leaves behind some social, economical and emotional traces, which then become part of the previously colonized society. Postcolonial studies or Literature is the literature created after the physical departure of colonizer from the colonized territory.

The movie unearth the history of Indian independence as well as of Indian partition by representing a pair of children who were born in Bombay at the stroke of midnight on 15th August, 1947 , with a birth of new country.

It was the time of highly patriotism where Jawaharlal Nehru was leading the Newly born independent country into and era of hope and grand possibility .

See in this movie:-

  • Narrative techniques.
  • Hybrid Identity.
  • Marxism
  • This man brought civilization to savages.
  • Magic Realism.
  • Religious perspection.
  • Complexity in relationship.
  • Political satire.
  • Historical events.

This movie in protagonist Saleem Sinai. Saleem Sinai tell his life story to Padma. In the movie we can see that Saleem life journey and also he mentioned his mother life journey as like he started his story setting at Kashmir with his grandfather. How his grandfather as Doctor and he loved his Patient and marriage with his Patient.

The story move on in Agra. Then his mother story started his mother first marriage with Nadir Khan then second marriage with his father Ahmed sinal. Again settings it is changed Ahmed is business he moved away with his wife Amina to Mumbai. In the Mumbai they meet William Methon , he is Britisher . His physical relationship with Vanita which is not shown movie but suggest that thing Vanita pregnancy behind Methon not her husband.

And other side Amina has pregnancy, both child both as same date midnight, 15 August 1947, therefore, exactly as old as independent India. He later discovers that all children born in India between 12a.m. and 1a.m. on that date are imbued with special powers. Saleem, using his telepathic powers. And Saleem say his life journey how he faced struggle and film end with his son Adam.

In the movie two child born at same hospital one is Vanita and William Methon poor family belonging child other Ahmed Sinai and Amina child rich family belonging child and nurse Mary exchange that child each other according to Joe. And she changed destiny of there child one name Saleem and other name Shiva.

Film central Religioous is Muslim. Mary one mistake it became changing two children destiny. Actually Saleem has hybrid Identity mixed of Hindu and Christine son. While Shiva Identity as Hindu but really he is son of Muslim.

Saleem has hybrid Identity because he is child of mixed blood Christian and Hindu. But actually Saleem get Muslim Identity so it is match with hybrid Identity. And other characters like Shiva has also hybrid Identity because really he is Muslim son but he has Hindu Identity became hybrid because his father Shiva really is Muslim son and his mother Parvti is Hindu so their child religious Identity may be difference.

  •  'The Tell Tale Heart' and ' The Black Cat'.

'The Tell Tale Heart' is kind of self conference story while also self conference story. Both story narrative style is different Because we can not decide who is 'The Tell Tale Heart' story narrator. In this story, the Narrator is ' I ' so how can we decided who is narrate he or she . This is a story of a servant killed his ower because of his ower queer eye.

While 'The Black Cat' story related to one person killed the Cat because of his ego hurt then he killed his wife also. Both story crime reason one hatred eye. One is person eye and 'The Black Cat' story protagonist haterd 'Black Cat' eye.

  • 'The Fall of House' and ' The Cask of Amontillado'.

'The Cask of Amontillado' you might be thinking, Great. I don't even understand the title how am I supposed to understand this story? So before we can start exploring Edgar Allan Poe's famous short story, we first need to define a couple of words in his title. Amontillado is a very specific kind of Spanish Sherry, sherry being a fortified wine. And a Cask is a barrel.

Waiting for Godot

Hello, readers here my blog part of activity. This blog sumitted to Department of  English Maharaja KruashnKumarsinhji Bhavnagar University.

Samuel Barclay Beckett:-

Samuel Beckett was an Irish novelist, playwright, short story writer, theatre director, poet, and literary translator. A resident of Paris for most of his adult life, he wrote in both English and French. Beckett's work offers a bleak, tragicomic.

Waiting for Godot:-

Waiting for Godot is Samuel Beckett work . Waiting for Godot was a true innovation in drama and the Theatre of the Absurd's first theatrical success.

The play consists of conversation between Vladimir and Estragon , who are waiting for the arrival of the mysterious Godot, who continually sends word that he will appear but who never does.

Here some questions about thinking activity:-

1.What connection do you see in the setting ("A country road. A tree Evening") of the play and these painting?

The setting of the play " A country road,  A tree, Evening " and this painting both are the similar. In these both painting two persons are there.

But painting is imagination and country road in something real. This painting by Caspar David Friedrich and Beckett liked it, he found this painting in one art gallery. The title of this painting is "Longing" means wait. So this painting is important in play.

2. The tree is the only important 'thing' in the setting. What is the importance of tree in both acts? Why does Beckett grow a few leaves in Act 2 on the barren tree - The tree has four or five leaves?

Tree is use of symbolically , Beckett use in Frist act tree in no leaves but second act tree in come leaves but frist act in some hope some happyness and second act in tragic act but tree in see leaves so Beckett seen in this play by use of tree Nature is opposite then human being.

3. In both acts, evening falls into night and moon rises. How would you like to interpret this 'coming of night and moon' when actually they are waiting for Godot?

Evening falls into night and moon rises significance that the university is indifferent to us. Whatever happens in human life despair, anxiety, absurdity, nature's cycle goes on.

4. The director feels the setting with some debris. Can you read any meaning in the contours of debris in the setting of the play?

The director used debris in the setting. So it can be the influence of the World War 2 in the material world. Therefore, we can say that keep on destroying, nothing is permanent in the life.

5. The play begins with the dialogue " Nothing to be done" How does the theme of 'nothingness' recurs in the play?

The play begins with the dialogue " Nothing to be done" it is very retesting sentence if we apply it in our life then also it is right in our life goes on nothing on nothing to be done and yet we are living our life and nothingness is the main themes of the play so the Frist sentence we can understand.

6. Do you agree:" The play (waiting for Godot), we agreed, was a positive play, not negative , not pessimistic. As I saw it, with my blood and skin and eyes, the philosophy is: 'No matter what - atom bomb, hydrogen bombs, anything - life goes on. You can kill yourself, but you can't kill life." ( E.G Marshal who played Vladimir in original Broadway production 1950s)?

We can properly say that the play is negative , pessimistic or positive, but it has some remarkable points. It reflects the human desires that we constantly waiting for something who will save us, and free us from this cage of body. The play refers some biblical ideas and all the dialogues are deeply rooted from Bible.

7. How are the props like hat and boot used in the play? What is the symbolical significance of these props?

The props like hat and boot are representing human's attraction towards mind or body. Hat symbolically represents the mind as Vladimir is with hat and he keep on thinking , same with luck, when he starts thinking then to stop him one has to remove his hat. While Estragon has hat but he didn't use it he is more concentrate on his boots which are not comforting to him.

In second act when he finds fit to him he is satisfy with it. It shows that how some people are constantly thinking and how some are constantly comforting their bodily needs. With this vast difference also both are at same place.

8. Do you think that the obedience of Lucky is extremely irritating and nauseatic? Even when the master Pozzo is blind, he obediently handsthe whip in his hand. Do you think that such a capacity of slavishness is unbelievable?

Yes,as I saw the film I think the obedience of Luck is extremely irritating and nauseatic. When his master becomes blind he has the chance to run away but he didn't do that.

We also like Luck, we all have chance to free from slavery but we are acting like Lucky. It raises the question of existence. We are tied up with some kind of rope from which we don't want to free.

9. Who according to you is Godot? God? An object of desire? Death? Goal? Success? Or...

Not sure may be Godot is God or desire may be difference according to human beings may be Death, or Goal  and may be we are waiting objects all are Godot.

10. "The subject of the play is not Godot but 'Waiting' ( Esslin , A search for the self). Do you agree? How can you justify your answer?

Yes, I agree with the Esslin's point of view in 'A search for the self' that the subject and the main theme of the play is 'Waiting' not the Godot. We can see that in the play noting happen except the meaninglessness waiting. There is no one come and go, all the characters only waiting for someone but no one come.

11. Do you think plays like this can better be 'read' than 'viewed' as it requires a lot of thinking on the part of readers, while viewing, the torrent of dialogue does not give ample time and space to 'think'? Or is it that the audio visuals help in better understanding of the play?

Reading and viewing both has its own way After viewing our ideas become clear but it also binds our imagination. While reading our imagination expanded, but some ideas left unclear in our mind.

12.  Which of the following sequence you liked the most:

Vladimir- Estragon killing time in questions and conversation whilewaiting
Vladimir and Estragon: The hat and the Boot. Pozzo - Lucky episode in both acts . Conversation of Vladimir with the boy .

I like a Vladimir - Estragon killing time in questions and conversation whilewaiting in both acts.

13. Did you feel the effect of existential crisis or meaninglessness of human existence in the irrational and indifferent Universe during screening of the Movie? Where and when exactly that feeling was felt, if ever it was?

Yes , when Lucky and Pozzo enters it gives different effect of existence of Lucky. We can even tolerate the slavishness of Lucky. Pozzo treats Lucky as a slave, it raises the question on existential crises. How Lucky make himself slave for the piece of bones.

14. Vladimir and Estragon talks about 'hanging' themselves and commit suicide, but they do not do so. How do you read this idea of suicide in Existentialism?

In our innumerable list of desire, one is death also. Vladimir and Estragon also have that desire. We can say that they are fed up with waiting daily and trying to kill them selves, because it is not easy they don't do so. According to Existentialism suicide is not the solution. Existentialism says that even if there in no meaning in life but it doesn't mean that one should end their life. That is why Vladimir and Estragon thinks to do so but they don't.

15.  Or 16Can we do any political reading of the play if we see European nations represented by the 'names' of the characters (Vladimir - Russia; Estragon - France; Pozzo - Italy and Lucky - England)? What interpretation can be inferred from the play written just after World War 2? Whichcountry stand for Godot? So far as Pozzo and Lucky ( master and slave) are concerned, we have to remember that Beckett was a disciple of Joyce and that Joyce hated England. Beckett meant Pizz to be England, and Lucky to be Ireland" ( Bert Lahrvwho played Estragon in Broadway production). Does this reading make any sense? Why? How? What?

Yes, we can interpret the political reading in which Vladimir stand for Russia, Pozzo stand for Italy, Lucky stand for England and Estragon stand for France. So we can connect this to the world war in which these all countries destroyed by Godot means Germany that is why Vladimir asked to the boy that is Godot breathing?

The boy replied yes. So we connect may be Godot with Germany means Hitler, Pozzo and Lucky master and slave in which we connect Pozzo with England and Lucky with Ireland.

17. The more the things change, the more it remains similar. There seems to have no change in Act 1 and Act 2 of the play. Even the conversation between Vladimir and the Boy sounds almost similar. But there is one major change. In Act 1 in reply to Boy's question Vladimir says:

"Boy: What am I to tell Me. Godot, sir?
Vladimir: Tell him ...( He hesitates) ... Tell him you saw us. (pause) you did see us, didn't you?
How does this conversation go in Act 2 ? Is there any change in seeming similar situation and conversation? If so, what is it? What does in signify?

Yes, we can see the difference between first and second dialogue. In first act Vladimir use us( it means he thinking about both of them). While in second act Vladimir use me instead of us. So from those thing we analyses that when death will come we have to go alone.

Colonialism, Imperialism and postcolonialism

Hello, readers here my blog part of activity. This blog sumitted to Department of  English Maharaja KruashnKumarsinhji Bhavnagar University.

Colonialism:-

Is the policy of a nation seeking to extend or retain its authority over other people or territories, generally with the aim of economic dominance. The colonising country seeks to benefit from the colonised country or Land mass.

Imperialism:-

Is a policy or ideology of extending a nation's rule over foreign nations, often by military force or by gaining political and economic control of other areas.

Post colonialism:-

Post colonialism or post colonial studies is the academic study of the cultural legacy of colonialism and Imperialism, focusing on the human consequences of the control and exploitation of colonised people and their Lands.

The term colonialism and Imperialism are usually considered as having a some kind of common elements between them. But there is also a different between them. It becomes a necessary to konw about difference between colonialism and Imperialism.

Ania Loomba's:-

Ania Loomba discussed in detail about these terms in her Colonialism and post colonialism. Ania Loomba is an Indian literary scholar. She is the author of colonialism and post colonialism and works as a Literature professor at the university of Pennsylvania.

Colonialism is the physical occupation of territory and post colonialism deals with the effects of colonization on cultures and societies. In the beginning of the book, on the publication of the 'Second Edition' of the book Peter Hulme.

According the OED

A settlement in a new country a body of people who settle in a new locality, forming a community subject to or connected with their parental state; the community so formed , consisting of the original settlers and their descendants and successors, as long as the connection with the parent state is kept up.

Imperialism:-

According to Lenin and Kautsky say Imperialism is higher than colonialism. Colonialism can be defined as the conquest and control other people's Land and goods. The OED defines 'Imperial' as the 'rule of an emperor, especially when despotic or arbitrary; the principal or spirit of empire; advocacy of what are held to be Imperial interests'.

As a matter of fact, the connection of Imperial with royal authority is highly variable.

Post colonialism:-

Ania Loomba mentioned this definition to begin with, the prefix 'post' complicates matters because it implies an 'aftermath' in two senses temporal, as in coming after, and ideological, as in supplanting. Post colonialism, the historical period or state of affairs representing the aftermath of Western Colonialism; the term can also be used to describe the concurrent project to reclaim and rethink the history and agency of people subordinated under various forms of Imperialism.

Post colonialism signals a possible future of overcoming colonialism, yet new forms of domination or subordination can come in the wake of such changes, including new forms of global empire.
